Holden’s Favorite Things: Gifts for Screwups, SF Lovers, Office Peeps, Girls, Boys, Hipsters, Kids & Mums-To-Be

Because I’m cooler than Oprah, I have better taste and there’s no Oprah in SF.

Also these are not paid endorsements (you know, like Oprah’s). I got no money from anyone to tell you about this stuff. (But if you are the retailer who makes this stuff and, you know, wants to send me one, that would be pretty rad. Just saying.)

STATIONERY: “Sorry I Fucked Up” cards by Whimsy Press.

For the people in your life who fuck up a lot. There are some real winners in adorable yet snide cards from these folks.

You can get them here at RedStamp.com

BOOK: All Over Coffee by Paul Madonna

A must for any lover of San Francisco.

hardcover $17.95

Get it at City Lights (and on sale – wowie!)

Kara’s Cupcakes

I have seen grown men fall to their knees over these cupcakes. I kid you not. I sent them out as a corporate gift a couple of years ago and I’m still getting “Where were those cupcakes from?!?” emails. They are beyond.

You can get a few little gift packs for friends, or hell, you could do your whole wedding with Kara’s Cupcakes.

$36.00 (minimum)

You can order some here.

THINGYS: Apple Jackets by Jacqueline Dufresne at The Curiousity Shoppe

Because oh-my-god why didn’t someone think of this before? If I had an apple jacket, I would throwing an apple into my tote every day and not worrying about it getting all inked-up or bruised or whatever.

This is totally one of those things you don’t need, but that would be awesome once you had it. Obviously hand-knit and reusable and ADORABLE.

BOOKS: She Comes First by Ian Kerner, Ph. D.

Okay. Let me tell you a little something about this book. It changed my life. Well, actually, Jack and I reading this book changed my life. You think you know how to perform cunnilingus? Oh, my dear, you have so much to learn. And who can’t stand to improve a little, eh?

Every straight man and everyone with a clitoris needs to read this. I am not joking around here. It is AH-MAY-ZING.

Get it at San Francisco’s very own Good Vibrations

APPAREL: Blood Is The New Black T-Shirts

If you’re reading San Francisco Love Story (and you are), chances are you know at least one hipster (and you do). You love your local hipster and your local hipster loves T-shirts.

There is a fun “bargain bag” sale at Blood Is The New Black where you can get 5 shirts from a designer for $25. And you don’t even have to pick. When they arrive, you just hand them out willy-nilly. Trust me, that’s the way they like it.

BOOK: This is San Francisco by Miroslav Sasek

Some smartypants decided to re-release this 1962 children’s book and it is absolutely beautiful. For kids and grown-ups who have a fondness for brilliant illustration.

hardcover $17.95

Get it at City Lights

LINGERIE: Belabumbum maternity sexiness.

Okay, HELLO. How hot are pregnant mums? Answer: super-hot. Do they feel super-hot? Answer: Not all the time. What can we do about this? Give the expecting superfox in your life a nursing bra that doesn’t look like one.

My sources tell me these are super comfortable too. That, my friends, is a win.

Oh, an P.S. Gentlemen: giving her lingerie is most certainly a gift for you too. So you should get her that and something else.

$34 – $54

Get them here at Belabumbum.com

HOME: Framed wall graphic from Elly Nelly at Supermarket

There are a gazillion things at Supermarket that cool people want. The thing with Supermarket, though, is that they’re not the type of things you would really buy for yourself. And those things are exactly the kind of things you should give to other people. Brilliant, I know.

You can get cool things at Supermarket, and their website is awesome and fun and easy (which makes a serious difference if you’re a serious online shopper, a la me.)

  1. Dwayne Says:

I picked up that “This is San Francisco” book for myself a while back, and second the notion that it is fantastic. Anxious to grab a couple more from the series.

  2. gdewar Says:

oh I loved sasek’s book as a kid, even when I was being all rebellious and left the end of the rainbow for most of my adult life, only to return and say “WHAT WAS I THINKING” and remember what I missed about here most.
