Je Suis Snob: De Young Museum, I Love You

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Last year we got Vivienne Westwood. This year we get Yves Saint Laurent.

Opening November 1st at the De Young Museum:

The de Young is proud to present Yves Saint Laurent, the retrospective spanning 40 years of the work of couture master Yves Saint Laurent, which opens at the museum on November 1 and runs through April 5, 2009. We are the only United States venue for this exhibition.

This beautiful exhibition features nearly 130 fully accessorized haute couture garments spanning Saint Laurent’s entire career, from his early work for Dior to his final runway presentation in 2002. Among the highlights are the original “le smoking”—the first woman’s tuxedo, a suite of garments from his landmark African Collection of 1967 and the groundbreaking Ballets Russes Collection of 1976, and the Mondrian Dress.

Themes explored include Saint Laurent’s fascination with literature, art, the theater, flowers, animal prints, and exotic cultures. Also featured are his designs exploring volume and silhouette, men’s tailoring and his striking candy-colored palette. Original sketches, runway footage, photography and an audio presentation of Saint Laurent answering the Proust questionnaire round out the exhibition.

Several events are scheduled to enrich the YSL experience at the de Young:

Join us in November in the Koret Auditorium for a free screening of Tout Terriblement, a film by Jérôme de Missolz. This 1994 documentary presents a candid look at the life and work of Yves Saint Laurent in which he discusses his joys, sorrows, hopes and fears. Narrated by French actress Jeanne Moreau and filmed at his homes in Paris, Marrakech and Deauville, the film is in French with English subtitles. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Screening times: November 6, 1–2 pm, November 8, 3–4 pm, November 28, 7–8 pm.

Join us on Thursday, November 13, for Artpoint’s after-hours exhibition viewing and cocktail party in honor of Yves Saint Laurent. Designer drinks, hors d’oeuvres and dancing in Wilsey Court to DJ Andreas call out for your best YSL-inspired outfit.
